Materials: reinforced concrete, steel, wood, glass
Cost: 18 million USD

AE Interest: Uses a large thermal mass to account for Santiago’s desert climate instead of windows which would produce a greenhouse effect, has an atrium to allow indirect light inside the building and promote a sense of openness. [a]

Siamese Tower – Santiago, Chile

Location: Santiago, Chile
Architect: Alejandro Aravena – ELEMENTAL
Building Area: 5,000 sm
Design/ Construction Period: 2003-2005

AE interest: The building has two outer shells; the first is made of glass to protect against weathering and the second is made of fiber-cement to make it energy efficient. To account for the greenhouse effect they relied on the Venturi effect and allowed the hot air to rise through openings at the top of the building. [a]

Site area: 8500m²

AE interest: Chilean housing project applied the principle of incrementality, the initial area is 57m² and has the potential to grow up to 85m²; There are 484 incremental houses. [a]
